When water is in contact with the eye the focusing effect of the eye lens and cornea is reduced. The refractive index of water is not very different from the parts which make up the eye focusing system; this results in blurred vision. The goggles provide a small air space in front of the eyes to enable stronger focusing and clear vision. It is also more comfortable on the eyes but this is not as important.
